1. Introduction

The operation of water and wastewater treatment plants is a critical component in safeguarding public health, environmental sustainability, and efficient resource use. Treatment plant operators are responsible for ensuring that water and wastewater are treated to regulatory standards through safe, reliable and efficient processes.

This training course is designed to build the technical, operational, and safety skills needed to operate and maintain both water and wastewater treatment systems effectively. It integrates practical and theoretical components to ensure that operators are competent and confident in managing treatment plant operations.

 

2. Training Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the processes involved in water and wastewater treatment
• Operate and maintain treatment plant equipment efficiently
• Monitor and control water quality in compliance with standards
• Perform basic laboratory tests for process control
• Identify and troubleshoot operational problems
• Apply safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance measures

Module 3: Water Treatment Processes

• Coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation
• Filtration and disinfection techniques

Module 4: Wastewater Treatment Processes

• Primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment
• Activated sludge, trickling filters, lagoons

Module 5: Sludge Handling and Biosolids Management

• Sludge thickening, digestion, and dewatering
• Safe disposal and reuse

Module 6: Equipment and Instrumentation

• Pumps, valves, mixers, aerators
• Flow meters, sensors, and SCADA systems

Module 7: Process Monitoring and Control

• Sampling procedures and field testing
• Monitoring flow, turbidity, pH, DO, and residuals

Module 8: Laboratory Procedures for Plant Operators

• Basic lab tests (BOD, COD, TSS, coliforms)
• Quality assurance and data recording

Module 9: Safety, Health, and Environmental Practices

• Chemical handling and confined spaces
• Emergency response and personal protective equipment (PPE)

Module 10: Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Best Practices

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to participants who:

• Attend a minimum of 85% of sessions
• Successfully complete module quizzes, assignments, and practical assessments
• Participate in all hands-on and group activities

Certified Water and Wastewater Plant Operator (Advanced Track)

Awarded upon:

• Completion of a final practical and/or written assessment
• Submission of an operational improvement plan or project
• Demonstrated technical and safety proficiency

Certificates may be co-issued with government water authorities, utilities, vocational training institutes, or international water associations.
