Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT)
(Capacity Building Course)

Introduction
Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) is a
critical entry point to HIV prevention, care, treatment, and support services.
It empowers individuals to know their status, make informed decisions, and
adopt healthier behaviors. This training provides participants with both
theoretical knowledge and practical skills to offer effective VCT services
based on international best practices and national guidelines.

Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be
able to:
- Understand
the principles, ethics, and importance of VCT
- Conduct
pre-test and post-test counselling effectively
- Provide
accurate and non-judgmental information on HIV transmission and prevention
- Support
clients in coping with HIV-positive and HIV-negative results
- Maintain
client confidentiality and manage referrals
- Promote
uptake of HIV testing services in different settings

Expected Outcomes
Upon completion, participants will:

Certification
Certificate of Completion
Awarded to participants who:
- Attend
at least 85% of sessions
- Actively
participate in role plays and group discussions
Certificate of Competence in HIV
Counselling and Testing
Awarded to participants who:
- Successfully
complete a practical skills assessment (e.g., simulated counselling
session)
- Pass
a final evaluation (written or oral)
- Demonstrate
readiness to provide VCT services
Certificates may be co-endorsed by national AIDS
control programs, ministries of health, or partner NGOs. Some programs may also
qualify as prerequisites for national counsellor accreditation.
