1. Introduction

Palliative care plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS, particularly those with advanced disease or complex symptoms. As HIV becomes a chronic condition for many, and terminal for some, it is essential to integrate palliative care principles into HIV management. This training empowers healthcare providers with the knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills required to deliver holistic and person-centered care—including pain relief, psychosocial support, and end-of-life care.

 

2. Training Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and philosophy of palliative care
  • Recognize the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of people living with HIV/AIDS
  • Apply pain and symptom management techniques
  • Provide psychosocial and bereavement support
  • Integrate palliative care into HIV/AIDS treatment programs
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding end-of-life issues

  • Handling opportunistic infections

Module 6: Psychosocial Aspects of HIV/AIDS Care

  • Addressing stigma, anxiety, depression, and isolation
  • Counseling and social support

Module 7: Spiritual and Cultural Considerations in Palliative Care

  • Addressing existential and spiritual distress
  • Cultural sensitivity in end-of-life care

Module 8: Ethical and Legal Issues in HIV/AIDS Palliative Care

  • Informed consent, confidentiality, and autonomy
  • Advance care planning and legal frameworks

Module 9: Communication Skills in Palliative Care

Module 16: Capstone – Development of a Palliative Care Plan for a Case Scenario

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to participants who:

  • Attend at least 85% of sessions
  • Actively participate in all group exercises and discussions

Certificate of Competence in Palliative Care for HIV/AIDS Management

Granted upon:

  • Successful development and presentation of a case-based care plan
  • Demonstrated practical knowledge and skills through assessments or role-plays
  • Completion of a post-training evaluation or written test

Certificates may be issued in collaboration with Ministries of Health, Palliative Care Associations, National HIV/AIDS Councils, or Accredited Training Institutions.
